Regional Summary

It is difficult to account for the many child and youth nutrition programs that reach tens of thousands of children per year in Québec throughout schools, community centres, philanthropic and religious service points. However, a handful of major non-profit organizations share the biggest part of child nutrition services on a daily basis. The most prominent of these organizations serves close to 300 schools daily, amongst which figure 9 First Nations and Inuit schools, as far North as Nunavik. Despite these efforts, more than 1000 schools remain potentially eligible and many are waiting for the resources to see their own nutrition program start.

Child and youth nutrition programs in Québec are equally diversified in terms of strategies and services. Breakfast, lunch and healthy snack services are made possible by extensive fund raising activities as well as community, public, corporate and private partnerships. These partnerships mainly take the form of financial grants, but “in kind” donations remain a critical mode of contribution. Individual and corporate volunteering are also crucial to child and youth nutrition programs in Québec.
