Yukon Food for Learning Association (YFFLA) supports Yukon schools that wish to provide nutrition programs for their students. YFFLA is in its 15th year of operation and receives funding from a number of sources. The majority of YFFLA funding comes from the Yukon Government, Department of Health and Social Services with “in kind” support from the Department of Education. Other major funders are the Global Change for Children Foundation and Breakfast Clubs of Canada. YFFLA also receives “in kind” support from organizations such as the Yukon Teachers Association and some local businesses. Over the years there has been strong community support for YFFLA’s fundraising events from Yukoners and others from across Canada that have heard of the program. During the 2011/12 school year, YFFLA provided approximately $100,000 in funding to 27 of the 29 schools in the Yukon. Some schools only provide snacks while others provide breakfast, lunch and snacks. This year one rural secondary school has experimented with serving free hot lunches to all their students. They are already reporting improved attendance and morale. YFFLA is working successfully with First Nations in delivering community based programs in some of our schools.
