Our Vision: That every school aged child in Newfoundland and Labrador attends school well nourished to be ready to learn. Kids Eat Smart Foundation (KESF) is a registered charity developed in response to research that showed many children were going to school hungry. The Foundation is dedicated to education, health and wellness for school-aged children (K-12) throughout Newfoundland and Labrador. The Foundation supports 232 volunteer-run nutrition programs, known as Kids Eat Smart Clubs that are structured to ensure all children have access to nutritious foods that growing bodies and minds need. There is no charge, no envelope system, nor a registration process for children to participate. Kids Eat Smart Clubs server over 22,000 meals every day, in over 85% of all our schools in Newfoundland and Labrador. Kids Eat Smart is supported by annual funding from the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador, national and local funding partners, corporate donors, businesses, community groups and individuals. Kids Eat Smart Clubs are supported by their local community through cash and in-kind donations from parents, local businesses and through fundraising initiatives. Kids Eat Smart Foundation provides grants (start-up, sustaining, matching) for food and food service equipment that enable the set up and operation of Kids Eat Smart Clubs. Finally, and in response to emerging concerns about the incidence of obesity and diabetes amongst school children, KESF earmarks some of its grants specifically for Fruits and Vegetables. The Foundation also offers volunteers training and support in nutritious menu planning, safe food preparation and fundraising initiatives.
